Technisch gesehen basiert HYDROPHONIE auf den Möglichkeiten eines Generators mit variabler Funktion, der damals dem 1970 in Utrecht installierten Digitalcomputer vorausging. Dieses Gerät ermöglichte die Programmierung der Steuerspannungen unseres analogen Studios und damit die Anwendung vorab festgelegter Programme (programmed hybrid voltage control). In einem solchen Rahmen verwandelt sich das Komponieren für den Komponisten in eine Programmieraktivität. Mein Werk basiert daher auf gut durchdachten und ausgearbeiteten programmierten Strukturen. Dennoch neigte ich damals zu der Überzeugung, dass jedes Programm, das dazu dient, meine Musik zu organisieren und sogar zu produzieren, streng meine eigene Angelegenheit bleiben und nichts mit dem Zuhörer zu tun haben sollte. Aus diesem Grund habe ich – mit einer Ausnahme – die für HYDROPHONIE verwendeten Programme nie veröffentlicht. Getreu dieser Haltung habe ich daher derzeit nichts zu diesem Thema mitzuteilen. Ich bin jedoch sicher, dass der Zuhörer auch ohne diese Informationen von der ersten Begegnung mit meinem Werk an dessen musikalische Entwicklung lebhaft mitverfolgen wird, und zwar nicht nur in ihren Grundzügen, sondern auch in ihrem Reichtum an klanglichen Beziehungen und Übergängen. Ich möchte hinzufügen, dass alle Klänge meiner Musik auf rein synthetische Weise erzeugt wurden und jede Ähnlichkeit mit der „Realität” ausschließlich aus meinen musikalischen Strukturen resultiert. Der Titel entstand nach Fertigstellung des Werks beim ersten Anhören.
Technically speaking, HYDROPHONIE is based on the possibilities offered by a variable function generator which, at the time, preceded the digital computer installed in Utrecht in 1970. This device allowed the programming of control voltages in our analogue studio and, consequently, the application of premeditated programmes (programmed hybrid voltage control). In such a context, the act of composing becomes an activity of programming for the composer. My work is therefore based on well-thought-out and elaborate programmed structures. Nevertheless, at the time I tended towards the conviction that any programme intended to organise and even produce my music should remain strictly my own business and not become that of the listener. That is why – with one exception – I never made public the programmes used for HYDROPHONIE. True to this approach, I therefore have nothing to say on this point at present. However, I am certain that even without this, listeners will, from their very first encounter with my work, keenly follow the musical evolution that characterises it, not only in its broad outlines but also in its richness of sound relationships and transitions. I would add that all the sounds in my music have been generated purely synthetically, any resemblance to ‘reality’ being solely the result of my musical structures. The title came to me when I listened to the finished work for the first time.

Summer 2023 Archivation of Master Tapes
The tape archive of Werner Kaegis works is incorporated in the Sonology Archive in The Hague. The main works will be digitalized from the original master tapes. We hope that most of the electronic works will be published in the next years!! We are very happy that finally this wonderful material can be saved for the future.
New VOSIM66 software by Heinerich Kaegi
Between 2020 and 2024 Heinerich Kaegi and Ludger Hurts developed a new Vosim programm VOSIM66 based on the original ideas of Werner Kaegis Vosim and Midim systems. This programm is created in GNU Octave and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. See www.vosim.eu

Luuk Trip developed in 1999 a Vosim generator software VOS2WAV based on the original Vosim 7 vector. Meanwhile Luuk has adapted his VOS2WAV system for Windows 10. For more information, please mail us.
